Recently I'm also occupied with R&D on a VAWT, Aerogenatrator X, V-shaped Darrieus type turbine. Now the R&D projects on wind energy and wind turbines is emerging, a Wind Turbine Controls Work Group is launched. However the word Controls is in the work group name, it doesn't mean that it is all about the controls, since controls is about controlling a process.
Once one doesn't understand the process, most likely one doesn't know how to control it. So in this work group all disciplines involved into wind turbines are combined and very welcome. with the disciplines I mean: Aerodynamics, Mechanics, Dynamics, Modeling, Electrics, Electronics, Power Electronics, architecture, Design Engineering, Controls, non-conventional Controls, Artificial Intelligence (ANN's, FLc's etc), Mathematics, etc. so there is too much to name it. It is all into it.
I invite everyone who is interested, to participate into this work group so they can share their knowledge, upload and download papers and publications and back ground information, start, follow and participate into discussions. And there is much more to name and to do.
I hope to welcome and see you all soon on this work group and to support the research and science to gain the best for us and to support and create a better world of energy for all people around the world.

In the case of Renewable Energy group, I think financial management is very important factor to conduct new proposal. For example, I have a new idea about new resources of energy but I can not raise it because I have to wait to increase of crude oil price to $168 or decrease to $33 to be feasible this ideas (due to capital budgeting analysis) where I consider the index for electricity price equal to 11.2 US cent / 1 kWh.

Liquid nitrogen was experimented with way back in the 1900's to power cars, and it does work. But it is not an energy source, just a way of storing energy. Just like a battery. You must get energy from somewhere (fossil fuels, hydroelectricity or whatever) to pressurise air to create liquid nitrogen, then you release that energy to run a car. The same goes for hydrogen powered cars - it works, but it's really just a different sort of battery, not an energy source, because you need energy to produce the hydrogen.
In other words, it cannot replace fossil fuels unless you come up with some other way of generating vast quantities of energy to produce vast quantities of liquid nitrogen. Nor can hydrogen. Personally I think we should be focussing on pure electric vehicles and improved battery technologies, as good efficiencies are possible there - but again we need to generate the electricity somewhere.

Not very advanced, I simply had this idea as a simplified solution for heat collecting between the Tropic Line and the Polar Circle... My conclusion was that HALF the vertical angle of the sun, at any time, has to be used to follow it in my sketched prototype. (Keep in mind that pipes are really very long, much more than Hn)

Renewable energy has a part of 3% of electric power production in the world. It has a high cost to implement and yet a lower afficiency.
Would it be realistic to continue working on this field?

Dear Soltani Mohammed and dear all,
about the 3% of the world wide production; that might be true. But this is not equally divided over the world. E.g. Germany has a much higher stake into this than many other countries. So you see countries which are actively developing and realizing such renewable energy programs, are still continuing, and even in a higher pace than before.
The high cost is just partially true, since you have to cope with definitions as ROI (Return on Investment) and payback times. It is correct that the initial investment is quite expensive. But most installations have covered their investment within 6 years. after that the energy is free. so it requires a complete new economical way of cost engineering to establish a finance plan for investors.
The efficiency is an issue which always is mentioned, but should not be of any interest, since one does not put paid energy like fuel into the system. So if a wind turbine experience an aerodynamic torque of 3MNm and it delivers just 1MNm on the low speed axis, it might have a low efficiency, but no one have to pay for the influent of wind causing the 3MNm of aerodynamic torque.
The same error of calculation I see with solar-PV's. If a panel of estimated 280W gives only 100W, owners tend to say that the efficiencyrate is just 35.71%. But this is a completely wrong statement, since the claim of 180W/panel is based on a manufacturer test facility where the mentioned panel is subjected to a solar irradiation of 1000W/m^2. And you have to consider that the 280W panel has not a surface of 1m^2, but just 2.42m^2. So at that point on the test site it might deliver an output of 280W at a rate of 115W/m^2 <=> 280/2.42=115W/m^2.
So if once installed the panel produces just 100W as output power, it will be caused by the fact that the experienced irradiation is about 357.1 W/m^2. The actual irradiation is depending on latitude, altitude, solar inclination etc.
But one has to reconsider that no one has to pay for the gratis 357.1 W/m^2 of irradiation, like in this example. It is all free, the only issue is the initial payment.
5 years ago I installed a 190 PV panel installation of 180W-panels (rated at an irradiation of 1000W/m^2 at a test site), combined with inverters for delivery to the grid for just in case. and 136 batteries of 12Vdc and about 100 to 110 Ah.
The installation experience a daily productivity by the panels of 8hrs/day at an average of 34kWhr. This means that 273kWhr each day as average over a year. The complete installtion cost (labor, time and material) was 161,577.71 USD. (162 thousand USD). With the average of local provider rated kWh price, the installation has paid it self back by now. So from know on the owner has its electrical energy free. And this is even 1 year early on schedule, because the estimated pay back time was 6 years. But because of more irradiation and higher kWh prices, the pay off has been 1 year early on schedule.
So know there is a daily amount of 273kWhr of electrical energy, for free. That is about 27 air-conditioning split units of 24000 BTU wit a SEER of 25, running 24/7 for free (in this tropical area with a high humidity rate). Think about that.
So my resume is that renewable energy, requires a complete different kind of approach, concerning investments and efficiency.
By now the cost rate of PV-panels, solar collectors and concentrators, wind turbines etc. have dropped dramatically. The only issue at this point is finding funds and investors, which is very hard in the middle of the economic crisis. I have several discussion groups, which are breaking their heads about it, since the energy world under these conditions is hardly moving back or forth. Governments have their plans, but they are hard to get access to.
Every time the discussion groups have just one conclusion: you have to have insiders into government programs, so a kind of detective work is required.
I hope that my comment gives you all an impression about the going on's and how to approach the cost estimates and efficiency of renewable energy. I am my self into 2 domestic and 1 industrial size program for off-grid hybrid wind-solar plants with energy storage, hydrogen facility, fuel cells, wind turbine and solar panels, which delivers 24/7 and with payback times of less than 6 years.

I have an equation for a vacuum type collector - its a polynomial...
Power (in watts) = AG(no - a1dT/G - a2(dT)^2/G)
A being aperture, G being solar incidence no being conversion factor, a1 and a2 being the loss coefficients - all these values are known. dT is difference between ambient and the collector temperature.
If the collector contains say 2 litres of water, you can use this equation, the energy to heat this is defined as
Power (in Joules) = mCdT
where m is mass, C is Specific heat of water and dT is temperature difference.
What I want is an equation that relates dT to t like
dT = somefunc(t)
So I can plot a graph and/or work out how the temperature of the collector increases in time given a known ambient temperature.
My maths just isn't up to the job...

see below info it might be use ful to YOU For a job and PhD I would suggest TNO/TU-Delft in the Netherlands http://www.tno.nl/content.cfm?context=overtno&content=overtnosub&laag1=32&item_id=62&Taal=2. This is a research institute into physics and has quite some subjects running into the field of renewables. It has close ties with the TU-Delft (Technical University). The Netherlands, Germany, Scandivavian countries, the UK and USA have currently a lot of programs into renewable energies. However Germany, Finland and the USA are a kind of troublesome to get into for these projects. Germany and Finland like to keep the jobs for hose who are already in those countries. The USA have a lot of high skilled engineers released from NASA, because of the shutdown of the Space Shuttle program. So those engineers are most likely prefered. The Netherlands and the UK have several programs in other countries, which are accessible for foreigners. And since governmental benefits depend on the amount of students and graduates (in the Netherlands) they encourage foreign students and promovendi to do their study and research over there. See the website of TU-Delft http://tudelft.nl/en/ . Next to this the IEEE can give you any information worldwide. Their website http://www.ieee.org/ .As far as I'm concerned I determined that Brookhaven and NREL are excellent research institutes, however I experienced that Brookhaven at this point prefers most likely US-citizens. NREL is somehow more accessible to foreign input.
For the Netherlands I forgot to tell you about Innotiv. They have likely possibilities for jobs and promovendi. For the Caribbean Water Management (disinfection and reuse) is in high pace research and development programs to combine it with renewable energy sources. I hope you can find your way with this information. But remember a lot of projects are shovel ready to start, but are also waiting for the green light by sponsors and financial institues from Europe and the USA. And that is a frustration at this moment. I hope to have you informed sufficiently in an appropriate way, and that this will help you into a prosperous direction. Considering the fact that a solar cell is a kind of a semiconducting device with a solar irradiation triggered current sources, you can understand that thermal inluences, resistances and capacitance or impedance, are elements of such a cell. You have to consider if the cell is mono crystaline, poly crystaline or amorphous.

First of all, you should design the thermal circuit of the plant (steam generator, steam turbine, condenser, regenerative heat exchangers, pumps). After that, you should draw the expansion line in the turbine, finding the steam enthalpies from inlet to exhaust.
The following step is to compute by mass and energy balances the steam rate flows that leave the turbine to the heat exchangers, in order to obtain the mass flow rates of the steam that expands. The internal power represents the sum of the flow rates x enthalpy drops of each turbine section. Multiply this with mechanical and electric generator efficiency and you have the electric pover produced by the steam turbine.

If we analyze the commercially available wind turbine generators, it is found that direct drive, grid connected generators indicate a future trend in the wind generation. The system reliability will increase by elimination of the gear boxes and the power electronic converters. Also the system efficiency will increase because the losses in the gear box and power electronic converters are eliminated. Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator(PMSG), Field excited synchronous generator (FESG) and the Induction Generator(IG) are three candidate for such application. As permanent magnet excitation eliminates the excitation losses of a FESG hence PMSG will be more favored option.The direct drive, grid connected IG and PMSG generators are intended for fixed speed operations. When the PMSG generator is connected to the grid, the speed is determined by the grid frequency and is constant.So, if the torque to the generator is increased (sudden blow of wind), the generator will produce electromagnetic force to resist an increase in speed. So, a blow of wind leads to large stresses on the wind turbine’s drive train. However IG allows a small change of speed with the change of torque going to the generator and lower stresses/tear and wear of the drive train. As the IG and the PMSG machine have similar Stator, the cost difference is mainly due to the rotor. The PM’s cost is always going to be more than that of aluminum and one can see that the cost of the induction generator is expected to be much lower than the PMSG generators for the same power rating. But PMSG generators have higher efficiency so the higher material cost may be somewhat compensated for the extra electricity generated. Also, inductive power factor of the induction generators require capacitors for power factor correction and may increases the overall cost of the IG. So, a trade-off analysis is needed for case by case basis before declaring any one machine best for an application or an Installation.

Also how would we dispose all the battery after its life is over? also it will surely effect the landscape n may be birds may get affected due to maximum number of blades. Best source of the renewable energy will be solar but only one source is not possible in my view. Yes Man totally agree : some one has to start the ball rolling in a massive way using Internet Network what ever way possible. I was reading for the last 30 years the theory of Yull Brown, Bedinni, Tesla and others, it seems to me that they have convinced the people that works on bench laboratory enviroment, but as soon as it gets bigger it thoes not stay to its claims. I have been working in my old Mazda E2000 Slant VA Engine have converted to take some wider firing order, have reworked completelly the normal engine and runned with a Hydrogen Cells for some times, but untill now in the back yard, Australian Rules prevent me taking the car into the road, We talk hips in all the media about alternative, sustainable but as soon as you do something you are limited to testing field only, by the way I can run the vehicle on LP Gass and petrol no worries but Hydrogen have stoped me to get out in the streets. Ii understand we desperately need more than one revel to get and defy the standard way of thinking security. I would like to hear from any one that has had practical experience in using alternative in a usable efficient way that can replace the standard usage of fossil fuel. I'm a very practical person like to hear practical people and join the individual Force.

My project has Bomass, Bioenergy and Biofuels as a means to mitigate Global Climate Change since the
Trees and Grass sequester carbon in the soil where it is needed with the root growth. The replacement
fuel is needed and economies of scale will lower price. We are focused on marginal land so crop land
for food is not impacrted. I have discussed this extensively and will continue at Renewable Energy and Space Power group here at Research Gate. We have planted Switchgrass on Energy Commission of Nigeria property and have had good results. Switchgrass was planted in Nepal as well with good results
also. Adding carbon to the soil is ideal for productivity of other crops in a rotational schedule as I am
thinking. Any thoughts on this?

I'm currently developing what some would call "the look of the future". This is besides the point but I was trying to convey the importance of this overlooked force. Monorails are a prime example of how effective the levitation from the repulsion of magnets is. The thought of not having independent velocity is hard to accept but this is what may have to occur. Especially since the safety factor drastically increases. Im also working on a concept that is much like the bicycle. I'm hoping that I can get useful feedback from those that are interested.

I develop my PhD Thesis in ECONOMICS about ECONOMICAL OPTIMIZATION OF ONSHORE WIND PARKS, and my research aims the objective developing an algorithm for calculating the economical gain in the life cycle of a wind energy onshore project through the correlation of wind velocity (m.s-1) and energy production (MWh.year-1) in order to increase competitiveness and management success of wind parks. The model to be developed will use a “Cost Correction Factor” which takes into consideration the wind velocity.

Sidney, While I'd like to think that this, more recent work is "better," I'm going to just patiently watch the situation. Which is to say, it may be that further analysis on recent data will show up errors in the paper you've linked in here. I'm not trying to undermine the argument, I'm just remaining healthily skeptical of new conclusions until they've been validated by others. I'd do that no matter what the new results were.

Cost. It would be ravenously expensive to get a station near the sun. Then we have to transmit the power to Earth. More high-tech. Most cost. The first step, if we went that route, would be to put stations in Earth orbit. Still more solar energy - and no "night-time" if we choose the right orbit - but we still have to get the power back down, which means MASSIVE microwave or laser receivers. And some people get upset at the thought of birds getting cooked going through the beam coming down from orbit (which wouldn't happen). And what about using the beam as a weapon. Even then, it would be 'way more expensive than just using common sense with ground based systems.
Not that common sense is that common these days....

We, as a species have observed how plants can take energy and can convert it into glucose and convert the remaining into starch in order to survive. Now if we take that and simply use basic genetic engineering technology already available to us to create a genetically altered plant that stores energy more efficiently than previously existing solar panels.
