What is technology acceptance?
Relevant answer
Answer
Technology Acceptance is an information systems theory that models how users come to accept and use a technology.
The model suggests that when users are presented with a new technology, a number of factors influence their decision about how and when they will use it, notably:
> Perceived usefulness (PU) - This was defined by Fred Davis as "the degree to which a person believes that using a particular system would enhance his or her job performance".
> Perceived ease-of-use (PEOU) - Davis defined this as "the degree to which a person believes that using a particular system would be free from effort"
Have a search of ResearchGate and you will find a few interesting publications related to this.

as we lay roads every time their height increases leading to reduced Divider and pavement height. What can be done towards this?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Sandeep, ........................
You are talking about bitumen surfaces. ......................
This problem does not occur with slurry seals or chip and spray type treatments which have little or no depth. It does occur when a bitumen premix overlay is added - however this should normally only be necessary every 25 to 40 years (depending on a variety of reasons which cannot be explored in this wee note!) .............................
The most common practice (at least in South Africa) is to rout out a wedge adjacent to the channel, the depth of the overlay at the channel edge, and with the depth routed out decreasing away from the kerb and channel. This allows the new bitumen surface to be laid to its full depth, while the height of the face of the kerb, whether at divider or pavement/sidewalk edge, remains unaffected. ......................
Of course, manholes and suchlike things occurring in the roadway itself do have to be individually raised - a tedious job!.................
If I may comment further, the construction layers beneath the bitumen surfacing are, as Mr Yee Loon Lee has commented, most important as they provide the strength of the roadway to bear the traffic loadings, and hence contribute to the durability/longevity of the roadway in toto. If they fail to any large degree you are going to be faced with total reconstruction.................
Please let me know if you want greater detail on any point............

I would like to collect details of standard design vehicles for different countries. So far I have details for the UK, USA and Germany. Can anyone send me details for other countries please?
Background: at lower speeds the dimensions of vehicles will affect the dimensions of transport infrastructure (car parks are a good example). Many countries have defined standard dimensions for "design vehicles" which should then be used by the infrastructure planner.

Question

I’m very interested in effects of near-fault forward-directivity ground motions but I don't know how the ground motions must be scaled.
Do we have to scale these ground motions with design spectra and then applied them to the structures or we must scale each of these ground motions to PGA which collapse is happened (IDA analysis)?
Relevant answer
Answer
Scaling of timehistories should be applied in both amplitude and frequency domain to assure you that a valid range of energy enter the structure. But if you want to use Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA), it is not needed to scale it in amplitude domain according to Design Spectrum. You should choose several timehistories regarding to “Earthquake Motion Priority” and scale them by your desired acceleration steps. After your analysis, you should not forget to depict your results against acceleration state.

Could anyone recommend some software based on their experiences?
Relevant answer
Answer
A theodolite data cannot be automatically integrated to AutoCAD, only data from total station or GPS is possible.
Question
9 answers
In beam-column joint reversed cyclic loading test, there is generally two types loading scheme(fig1,2). The loading type in fig1 is that the load is applied on the column tip and the loading type in fig2 is that the loads is applied on the beam tips. The loading type in fig1 is widely used in the US, European, Japan and so on. However the loading type in fig2 is widely used in China. Why?(I only know the loading type in fig1 can consider the P-delta effect.)
Thanks very much for consideration!
Relevant answer
Answer
The two loading schemes shown here are actually the same. In both cases the cyclic loading is applied by actuators mounted to the beam tips applying vertical loading. The constant axial load on the column is applied with a jack. The main difference here is in the use of an external load frame. We have in the past used a scheme where the beam tips were held fixed vertically with a reaction system and the cyclic loading was applied with an actuator applying horizontal loading to the column top. The main reason to prefer one scheme over the other is a matter of cost and ease of testing. In both cases the vertical column load is applied with jacks.

Ex. 1:1.5:3 is the ration of M20 and now how much sand or cement or aggregate we use in this?
Relevant answer
Answer
Detailed analysis on M20  = 1:1.5:3 (Ratio)
As we know that  during concreting when we place wet concrete , it gets harden after certain standard time( 30 mins IST & 10hrs FST), considering same it had be decided upon by Civil design Engineers to take a factor of safety ranging from 1.54 to 1.57 to counter that shrinkage.
i.e volume of dry Concrete = 1.54 to 1.57 times Volume of wet concrete.
Now calculations is as follows for 1cum(assumed) of Concrete work
ratio Sum = 1+1.5+3=5.5
Shrinkage or safety Factor =1.57 (you can take 1.54 also)
So Total volume of wet concrete required is :- 1.57cum
Volume of broken stone Require = (3/5.5) x 1.57 = 0.856 m3
Volume of sand Require = (1.5/5.5) x 1.57 = 0.471 m3
Volume of cement = (1/5.5) x 1.57 = 0.285 m3
= 0.285 x1440 = 411 kg
For 1m3 of M20 (1:1.5:3)
Broken stone = 0.856 m3
Sand = 0.472 m3
Cement = 8.22 bag.
Some important conclusion from above
8 bag of Cement is required for 1cum of concrete work in M20.
4.4 bag of cement is required for 1cum of concrete work in M10.
volume of dry concrete =1.54 times volume of wet concrete.
Thank You Folks!

In india l column is not used but it usage is advantages in many uses .so, interested to know about it.
Relevant answer
Answer
Square columns are usually used where the eccentricity of the acting load is very small or nearly zero (this case is very rare in practice). It is used also when the bending moments acting at two perpendicular directions are nearly equal (this case occur when the beams supported by the columns have nearly equal loads and spans). In the two previous cases the reinforcement are distributed along the four faces of the cross-section.
L shaped columns are usually used in corners of buildings when the spans of the exterior beams are relatively large and creating large bending moments. Care must be exercised in distributing the reinforcement.

where is the best place for specialization in USA in CIvil Engineering
Relevant answer
Answer
I don't know if there is a best place, especially since I don’t know what area of civil engineering specialization is of interest to you. As an old-timer (I graduated in 1957), I have seen areas if the field become in high demand, and then drop off. It seems to me, however, that from what I read and hear, that environmental engineering is a hot area, and also transportation and structural. Sustainable Development is another burgeoning field, I have never had an interest in structural, but during my active career in private practice, I have seen environmental engineering grow in breadth and scope.
I think that whatever area of civil engineering practice will interest you, it is probably going to be beneficial to look for a career in one of the more metropolitan areas of the country, such as metropolitan areas in major states like New York, New Jersey, California, Illinois, etc. The Internet, however, presents an excellent area to research what firms are doing, and where. As you probably know, there are engineering firms that have only a few employees, those in the 100’s of employees, as well as some in the thousands, and even tens of thousands of employees.
Starting a career in civil engineering now seems to me to present great potential for advancement, as well as the opportunity to make a very big difference to the future of the global community

how can i get an idea to choose a topic for my dissertation??? currently i'm doing my Msc Civil Eng. (Structure)
Relevant answer
Answer
  • how can i get an idea to choose a topic for my dissertation???
  1. Choosing a topic poses a major obstacle for many students in the dissertation writing process.
  2. Some proactive ways to select a topic follow.
  • Day (1983) defines a good title “as the fewest possible words that adequately describe the contents of the paper” (p.9).
  • Develop a topic that has interested you throughout your graduate or undergraduate career.
  • Think about the top three issues you want to study and turn them into questions.
  • Look for what other scholars say needs more study and conduct preliminary research.
Effective titles in academic research papers have several characteristics.
Indicate accurately the subject and scope of the study,
Rarely use abbreviations unless they are commonly known,
Use words that create a positive impression and stimulate reader interest,
Use current nomenclature from the field of study,
Identify key variables, both dependent and independent,
May reveal how the paper will be organized,
Suggest a relationship between variables which supports the major hypothesis,
Is limited to 10 to 15 substantive words,
Does not include redundant phrasing, such as, "A study of," "An analysis of" or similar constructions,
May be in the form of a question or declarative statement,
If you use a quote as part of the title, the source of the quote is cited [usually using an asterisk and footnote],
Use correct grammar and capitalization with all first words and last words capitalized, including the first word of a subtitle.
All nouns,  pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that appear between the first and last words of the title are also capitalized, and
Rarely uses an exclamation mark at the end of the title.

Earthquake magnitude is a measure of the energy released during the earthquake and defines the size of the seismic event.
Accepted measure of magnitude is the Richter scale and relationship between energy released, E, and Richter magnitude, M, is
log10 E=11.4 + 1.5M
Where E is in ergs.
Read more: Engineers Daily: Richter Scale Magnitude Calculation of an Earthquake http://www.engineersdaily.com/2011/05/richter-scale-magnitude-calculation-of.html
Relevant answer
Answer
that's true (logE = 11.8 + 1.5 M) but richter magnitude is subjective since it does not provide an accurate measure of structures. other parameters such as intensity (e.g., area under square of acceleration), frequency content, total duration, number of zero crossings, fundamental frequency of the structure, etc. do affect structural damage caused by quakes.
